Information: I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee in a little town called Mount Carmel. I was the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Methodist Preachers, but my father broke the chain. To be in ministry now pleases me as I feel I have returned to the “Family Business”. I am a graduate of East Tennessee State University where I majored in Elementary Education and Special Education. I originally pursued Special Education to work with children who were Mentally Challenged and did my student teaching with Trainable and Educable Mentally Handicapped children and youth. I moved to Roanoke, Virginia just out of college and was hired by Roanoke City Schools as a teacher of children with Learning Disabilities. This was a rewarding experience, but not without its challenges. In 1988, I married my husband Robert Wagner and I moved to Rocky Mount, Virginia and taught a non-categorical Special Education Class. I had children who were Learning Disabled, Emotionally Disturbed, and Educable and Trainable Mentally Challenged. I moved back to Roanoke that same year when my husband, who works for the Power Company, was transferred to Roanoke. I retired from teaching in 1990 when my son, Robbie, was born. As he grew, I began to volunteer in children’s programming at church. If we were at a church that didn’t have a program for Robbie that I thought they should have, I developed one. We moved to Martinsville, where I fell in love with Children’s Ministry. I was the volunteer Children’s Ministry Coordinator for two years at our church there. I directed Vacation Bible School and Children’s Church and any other special events that we had for children. I assisted the choir director with children’s choirs and began to think then that I wanted to pursue a career in Children’s Ministry. I continued this idea at our church in Huntington, West Virginia when we were moved there. When we moved back to Roanoke in 1998, I heard of an opening in Children’s Ministry at Huntington Court United Methodist. Even though I didn’t have a degree in Christian Education, they hired me because of my degree in Education and my love of Children’s Ministry. I worked there for about a year, when God called me to Bonsack United Methodist in 2000. I have been the Program Director at Bonsack ever since. In addition to Children’s Ministry, I have the privilege of coordinating the Christian Education Programs and Lay Ministry Programs of the Church. It has been an awesome experience and I see now how God had this planned for me all along.
